Speaker inspires young leaders at Joburg Student Council orientation

The City of Johannesburg hosted an orientation for newly appointed members of the Joburg Student Council for the 2026/27 term, bringing together learners, educators, parents and City officials.

Among those in attendance were Andile Gobinca, Secretary to Council; Brenda Andrews, Manager of the Student Council; and Kureish Isaacs, Director: Ward Governance and Community Participation. The session marked the start of the junior councillors’ journey as representatives of young people in the city.

Speaker of Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds delivered the keynote address, highlighting the responsibility entrusted to learners selected to serve their peers through the Student Council.

She said their selection reflected a willingness to serve and accept responsibility. “You have been chosen not because you are perfect, but because you have shown potential, courage and a readiness to serve others,” she said.

Cllr Arnolds emphasised that leadership is rooted in accountability and ethical conduct, noting that the Student Council introduces learners to democratic participation, public service and active citizenship — key pillars of democracy and good governance.

“Leadership is not about status or popularity, but about service, empathy and integrity,” she said. “It requires listening, fairness and a commitment to act in the interests of others.”

She also reflected on the role of Council as the legislative arm of the City, describing it as the custodian of the will and aspirations of residents and a platform where accountability is upheld.

“Serving as a junior councillor is both an honour and a responsibility,” she added. “You are entrusted with representing your peers and safeguarding their interests with discipline and respect.”

Cllr Arnolds acknowledged the role of parents, educators, City officials and programme partners in supporting learners throughout their term of office. Concluding her address, she urged the newly oriented Joburg Student Councillors to lead with humility, courage and compassion.
