Legends Township Marathon showcases the pride and pulse of Eldorado Park

The City of Johannesburg reaffirmed its support for the 29th Legends Township Marathon, held on Sunday, 22 February 2026, at Eldorado Park Stadium. Eldorado Park and surrounding areas turned into a vibrant sea of colour as more than 5,000 athletes took to the streets—an increase of 1,500 participants compared to the 2025 edition.

Since its inception in 1995, the Legends Township Marathon has grown into the largest annual sporting event in Eldorado Park and a highlight on the City’s community sport calendar.

The marathon featured a 42.2km race, a half marathon, a 10km run, a 10km walk and a 4.5km fun run. Importantly, it is an official qualifier for both the Two Oceans Marathon and the Comrades Marathon, reinforcing its national standing in South Africa’s road running fraternity.

Beyond competition, the event plays a meaningful social development role. Through the City’s Community Development Department, the marathon supports initiatives aimed at addressing youth unemployment, substance abuse and social exclusion, while promoting unity, discipline and hope. Acting Director of Sport and Recreation Karen du Plessis said the City recognises the marathon’s strong community partnerships.

“The City acknowledges the social development focus of the Legends Township Marathon, including its partnerships with local athletic clubs, schools and non-governmental organisations such as Come Back Mission and Gangs to Grace.

“These collaborations enable year-round ‘Give Back’ programmes, including feeding schemes, school support initiatives and sports development activities that benefit the broader Eldorado Park community and neighbouring townships,” she said.

Eldero van Heerden, who completed the 42km race, said, “I wanted to be part of this memorable event that showcases Eldos as a place of talent and responsible citizens—not just the negative stories often associated with it.”

Residents and visitors lined the streets to cheer on runners, celebrating a marathon that continues to reflect the resilience, pride and heartbeat of Johannesburg’s townships.
