Joburg Market’s Unity Market to boost Johannesburg’s informal economy

Established inside South Africa’s largest fresh produce market, Unity Market is a space where hope, resilience and opportunity come together. Located between Halls 3/4 and 5/6 at Joburg Market, it is a dedicated area for informal traders who buy and resell fresh produce using cash. More than just a trading space, Unity Market is a lifeline for 36 traders whose businesses support their families and contribute to inclusive economic growth.

Home to 21 store traders and 15 pallet traders, Unity Market serves as a vital link for street vendors from across Johannesburg. These vendors purchase fresh produce in smaller, affordable quantities, enabling them to stock their stalls and sustain businesses within their communities.

The market is alive with daily activity as traders work tirelessly to earn a living, create jobs and build sustainable enterprises. Through their efforts, they become part of Joburg Market’s broader mission to ensure that economic participation remains accessible, especially within the informal economy.

For 40-year-old Victor Rikhotso, a trader and Chairman of Unity Market, the market represents a second chance. After struggling to find formal employment, he began trading at Unity Market in 2012. “I started my business in 2012 after struggling to find formal employment. Starting here was the best decision I have ever made,” he says.  Despite challenges such as quieter off-peak periods, he remains grateful for the opportunity to provide for his family.

Unity Market Secretary and trader Tshetshi Ranulifho attributes his success to trust and quality. By offering affordable prices and good-quality produce, he has built strong relationships with customers.

Joburg Market supports this ecosystem by providing secure facilities, maintenance and a safe environment. Serving over 14 000 buyers, Unity Market offers informal traders access to opportunities that would otherwise be beyond their reach, while continuing to champion inclusive economic growth.
