Joburg entrepreneurs go global as 65 SMMEs graduate export programme

The City’s Trade and Investment Directorate has bolstered Joburg’s global economic footprint following the graduation of 65 small and medium-sized enterprises [SMMEs] from its high-impact Export Development and Capacitation Programme. The initiative, a strategic collaboration with the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry [JCCI], has now equipped nearly 150 local entrepreneurs with the sophisticated business acumen required to penetrate international markets.

By focusing on export readiness, the programme directly addresses the City’s mandate to cultivate a resilient, globally competitive economy. Councillor Nomoya Mnisi, MMC for Economic Development, notes that in a low-growth climate, survival depends on international competitiveness.

“Our partnership with the JCCI is evidence of our commitment to creating an enabling environment where our SMMEs can thrive through strategic partnerships and digitalisation,” Mnisi says.

The practical utility of the City’s intervention is evident in the technical milestones achieved by its beneficiaries. For Bokgoni Nonyane, a 15-year-old entrepreneur, the programme provided the regulatory framework needed to secure an official exporter’s licence and formalise trade agreements. This newfound expertise inspired Nonyane to author an entrepreneurial guide to encourage youth participation in the sector.

Similarly, Bukisa Brands credited the initiative for providing the vital business acumen and mentorship required to elevate a local vision into a global brand presence.

The programme’s emphasis on networking and “B2B” collaboration was further highlighted by Lebogang Madumo of Timeless Décor Services, whose participation led to a manufacturing tender and an exhibition at SAITEX 2024.

By transforming local artisans into export-ready entities, the City continues to align with the National Exporter Development Programme, ensuring that Joburg’s entrepreneurs are active participants in the global value chain.
