Joburg Open golf tournament set to tee off in 2 days

The prestigious international golf tournament, Joburg Open, is set to tee off in less than two days at the Houghton Golf Club.

On Thursday, 5 March 2026, Executive Mayor of the City Cllr Dada Morero will hit the opening shot at the 18th edition of the Joburg Open golf tournament. The tournament kicked off with the Pro-Am on Tuesday, 3 March where 90 amateur golfers had a once in a lifetime opportunity to play alongside 30 professional golfers on Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour.

From Thursday, the main tournament will feature elite golfers, including former winners. Reigning champion Calum Hill will defend his title. Other former champions competing include Thriston Lawrence (2021) and Haydn Porteous (2016).

Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, will make his tournament debut.

City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane says this year’s edition of the tournament welcomes over 150 golfers from around the world. “The City is proud to host the Joburg Open. It is one of the highlight events on our calendar and positions Johannesburg as premier sporting destination, Joburg open attract interest as it is broadcasted to millions of viewers worldwide.”

“Each year, the tournament attracts investment and partnerships through its global visibility. It also creates opportunities for caddies, local vendors and entrepreneurs to contribute to the success of the event.”

Modingoane encouraged residents and visitors to attend the tournament. “If you are an avid golfer, a fan or an amateur player, bring your friends and family. This tournament gives residents the opportunity to experience an international sporting event in their home city.”

Spectators are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring umbrellas while walking the fairways.
