The City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Directorate brought its vibrant Sports Festival to Region B on Saturday, 28 February, with the Randburg Sports Complex buzzing with energy and young talent.
The festival, which has been rolling out across the City’s regions since early February, continues to create a dynamic platform for athletes under the age of 15 to showcase and sharpen their skills. Region B saw 600 participants from various federations and schools competing in an exciting line-up of sporting codes, including female football, netball, swimming, volleyball, basketball, PWD basketball and PWD table tennis.
More than just a day of competition, the festival plays a crucial role in identifying and nurturing future sporting stars, while promoting positive lifestyles among Johannesburg’s youth.
Head of Sports and Recreation, Mbulelo Bezu, applauded organisers and participants for their dedication and enthusiasm. “This event, like those in the other regions, reflects the City’s firm commitment to youth development through sport.
“It is encouraging to witness young people displaying their talent and passion. Through initiatives such as these, we continue to nurture future champions and keep our youth positively engaged. We remain a City that cares,” said Bezu.
After a day of closely contested matches, the following teams emerged victorious:
Netball: UJ Academy
Basketball: Elite Basketball Academy
Volleyball: Spiker Roo (Boys and Girls teams)
Female Football (Selection Process): Bordeaux Primary School and Westbury High School
The festival’s earlier legs were hosted in Region E at Paterson Park MPC & Swimming Pool, Region A at Rabie Ridge Stadium & Swimming Pool, and at the Moletsane Sports Complex in Soweto, continuing the City’s mission to take sport to communities across Johannesburg.
