Region A hosts vibrant city-wide Sport Festival for young talent

The City’s Sport and Recreation Directorate hosted a Sport Festival in Region A on 21 and 22 February 2026, delivering a two-day showcase of youth talent and community spirit at Rabie Ridge Stadium and its swimming pool. The festival featured female football, netball, swimming, volleyball, basketball for persons with disabilities, and tennis. The Region A instalment forms part of a city-wide programme taking place across different regions each weekend.

Focused on participants under the age of 15, the event provided a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase and sharpen their skills. With around 600 participants from local federations and schools taking part, the initiative plays an important role in identifying and nurturing future sporting stars.

“Our mandate includes the physical development of young people and nurturing talent across various sporting codes. It is encouraging to see such a strong turnout. We are proud to contribute to talent development while keeping young people positively engaged,” said Mbulelo Bezu, Community Development’s Sport and Recreation Assistant Head.

Among the rising stars was 14-year-old tennis player Nomfundo Sibeko, who confidently describes herself as a future champion. “These two days have been amazing. I’ve had the opportunity to showcase my skills and make important connections that will help grow my talent. I see myself as the next Serena Williams.”
