The City Manager of the City of Johannesburg, Dr Floyd Brink, conducted an oversight visit at the Johannesburg Water Depot in Randburg, where a major upgrade project is currently underway. The visit formed part of the City’s ongoing efforts to monitor progress on critical infrastructure projects being implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).
The depot, located in Region C, plays a vital operational role in servicing Region C and parts of Regions B, D and F, supporting Johannesburg Water’s ability to deliver reliable water services across multiple parts of the city.
The JDA finalised the procurement of the contractor in July 2025, with site handover taking place on 04 August 2025. The total value of the project is R18 million. The scope of work is being implemented in phases and includes upgrades to the following facilities:
- Administration Block (Main Building)
- Three Workshop Buildings
- Stand-by Building
- Training Centre Building
- Ablution Block
- Security Guard Building
- External works, including paving and landscaping
The bulk of the work undertaken has focused on wet services, including electrical, mechanical, fire, plumbing and ICT installations. Building-related works completed to date include painting, tiling and the installation of suspended ceilings.
The project is currently nearing the Practical Completion stage, with overall progress on compliance and Certificates of Compliance (COCs) at 88%. However, remedial works arising from deficiencies left by previous contractors—particularly relating to wet services, water reticulation, external drainage and stormwater systems—have necessitated rework by the current contractor. This has resulted in a limited extension of time to ensure quality and full compliance.
Despite these challenges, the project remains on track, with completion anticipated by 14 March 2026.
The oversight visit allowed Brink and project stakeholders to assess on-site progress, address outstanding issues, and reaffirm the City’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that underpins efficient and sustainable service delivery.
