A group of cycling enthusiasts will take the streets of Soweto this weekend to raise awareness about bullying through a community cycling event. The social ride takes place on Sunday, 1 June 2025 in Kumalo Street, Orlando West. Mongezi Gqwaru, lead organiser of the event dupped Soweto Cyclists Khuphuka, says the cycling group consist of a group of friends who loves cycling and cycling for a purpose.
The group will do a 25km at a pace of 10kph minimum speed to a maximum of 17kph downhill. The race will occur on all Sundays for the month June, which coincides with youth month.
“With all the years that we’ve ridden together with the different friends, the support has been immensely big, and therefore we felt the need to be creative about our movement. That we should ride for a purpose, so that when we ride through the streets of Soweto, we ride with pride that we are representing our fellow cyclists the right way. The right way is charity donations, awareness campaigns, youth development and promoting Cycling,” says Gqwaru.
Looking ahead, the group plans to expand the initiative by cycling to local schools to spread the message about bullying.
“This event will be fully operational, with all the safety added precautions, adhering to all road rules and, not infiltrating the main busy roads, but using safe routes that are available inside the community, where the message of bullying should be rendered.”
The group will be supported by marshals to guide the riders and ensure safety. On Sunday the team will add an escort car for added safety measures.
“I urge all cyclists to come together on these kinds of events, because the truth is, one way or the other we are all faced with bullying wherever we go. We can end it, let’s stand out and speak out. Cyclists have mass power,” says Gqwaru.
